A downloadable game for Windows

-Description of the game-

Type Epsilon is a shoot em up inspired by danmaku games (Cave, Touhou Project, Seihou, Gunbird Ect...).

You have the possibility to choose between two characters:

Sion Orta Alexandria, a formidable magician prodigious descendant of a mystical power,
and Marianne Mirakuru, a young girl who is engaged in a magical militia the Panzer Knights.

The gameplay is a vertical shmup with bullets most of which are stylized by their shape, speed and intensity.

You have the ability to dodge bullets with a specific key that will allow you to slow down your character for better dodge accuracy.

A series of varied bosses with their own themes, you will experience a whole new adventure filled with secrets in a fantastic and intriguing world.

-Story-

Dream Haven, the ideal place where everyone would be in their right place, an utopia that lets everyone become who they want, without any basic necessities and restrictions such as hunger, thirst, aging, and so on.

Over the years, this freedom wasn’t enough anymore for some, so to spice up their daily life they’d find so blank, a group of people with bad intentions found a very old artefact, a lunar fragment that granted them quasi-divine powers: the Moon Rock, mysterious stone that granted unlimited power to anyone who touched it. However, it would also alter the physique of anyone who grab it, and people that got into contact with it would take the appearance of white skinned beings with horns. This power has served them as leverage in dominating this far too perfect world. With it, they would get much more freedom, and were able to uncover a long buried mankind flaw: thirst for conquest and power.

This thirst is what today eats away at the very principle of Dream Haven. To oppose these evil deeds that transgressed the morale and fundamentals of freedom upon which they were founded, elite units were created. These units, named “Panzer Knights”, had a sole purpose: to learn the secrets of a mystical art called the “Flux”, a power created to counter those who had fragments of the Moon Rock. They would also use it as a way to revert their damage, and brush up the painting of this world that had become imperfect.

After a relentless struggle that would last far too long, the Panzer Knights were finally able to vanquish the dark ambitions of this group of crazed beings, by turning back their own magic against themselves. This battle wouldn’t leave only a great many casualties, most people also kept a vivid memory of this event, an almost indelible scar that would stay under the eyes of them all for a long time yet: the Panzer Knights’ main HQ, struck off the map, leaving behind a huge crater devoid of any life, sealed, still reeking of war. Despite most of the Panzer Knights vanishing during these events, many remained, keeping a watchful eye on the state of this once more benevolent world.

Sion Orta Alexandria is the offspring of Panzer Knight Sastasha Kashua,  leader of the Epsilon elite squad. Following the war, Sastasha had disappeared, after tasking Sion with overseeing and learning all of Dream Haven secrets, but also the origins of this Moon Rock, and how it corrupted so many people by turning them into the power-hungry “Celestials”. Hidden in the buried temple of Alexandria, our prodigy and her friend Marianne would experience out of the ordinary adventures, and discover disturbing truths on what was brewing in their supposedly perfect world.

In present days at the Archives of the buried Great Alexandria Library, located in Vendest. Sion Orta Alexandria spends her days browsing her magical textbooks, looking to learn about magical diversity and Flux cores.

Our young protagonist is often alone, and is taking care of the premises when she gets bored.

Sometimes, her best friend, Marianne Mirakuru, a young Panzer Knight recruit from Vennord, would come to visit Sion in order to spar with her, or talk about adventures she goes on during her scouting missions.

One day, during the long Autumn, Marianne came to Sion hastily to alert her about a great threat coming from Vendouest. She warned her that she’d have to act quickly, as otherwise magical instabilities would affect and weaken all of Dream Haven’s regions.

A reconnaissance mission that had been undertaken by Marianne’s group found out that a group of unknown emissaries were absorbing the Flux, thus disrupting the vital energy of their world.

To ensure the issue is properly addressed, the player has the choice between Sion Orta, the young magician prodigy, or Marianne Mirakuru, the young Panzer Knight recruit.

Hello ! First of all congrats on the release of your demo :) I've played through the game 3 time (one time with type A and two with type B, getting a NDNB on my second clear of the game) Here's what I observed during my playthrought :

The good things :
-The game is overall very smooth to play with a constant 60fps.

-Mechanics are clear and easy to master
-The shot-types are versatile and offer different ways of playing

(special remark on type B focused shot-type being very satisfying to use)

-The music is really, really good. It stays in the typical Touhou style formula without being uncreative, and the compositions are originals tho I wonder if the boss 1 theme using Last Remote leitmotiv was intentional or not :)
-I've encountered NO bugs at all which I honestly didn't expect since Lua STG isn't a perfect engine, so great work on that too ! :D

-The difficulty curve is perfect as well :) perhaps just the last words in the easier difficulty that I've found perhaps too forgiving but nothing that needs a tweak.

[it looks like a lot, but it's because I give advises with it]

The things that should get revised :

-As a concept artist and illustrator it's the thing that stuck with me the most, the art consistency. You have these amazing cut-in when using bombs and during boss last spells that are in the painted art-style, but then the portraits feel lacking in comparison, they are too stiff, lack expressions and use dull colors, my advice would to get the cut-in artist to create the portrait as well or tell your current artist to revise the colors and posing of the portraits, they are not bad at all, just lacking when compared to the cut-ins :)

-The sound effects were a big jarring, especially the collecting and shooting one, you might want to make them less 8bit or tone down their intensity a bit

-The story is hard to follow, it probably comes to this being your first game but keep in mind this : you know the world, and it's characters within it, your players don't, you have to introduce them in a manner that makes sense or make it easy to understand. I could understand that Marianne was part of a group of people fairly important to the protection of the land and that there were many branches, but it was a bit convoluted. Ask a writer for revision perhaps Also, the text box are very empty due to the font being so small.

-This one is purely subjective but as a French native I was very put off by the mix between french/European and Japanese names and aesthetics, doesn't mean it can't work, but it was a bit on the nose the way it was presented. Again this one is purely my opinion and taste.

-This one is also nit-picking but if you can, change the Lua menu keys, the default confirm becomes z instead of w on AZERTY keyboard at least.
-Boss 2 theme is great, but the power kit drums are too loud.
-Stage 3 red spirals have very thin bullets that are hard to see, may I suggest making them a bit darker

Overall a very good demo and I can't wait to see the finish product :)
I hope my review will help and if you need any help here's my twitter : https://twitter.com/twisted_limbo
